14 injured as blast hits Afghanistan's Kandahar city on election day

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Up to 14 people, all civilians, were wounded as a blast hit Kandahar city, provincial capital of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province on Saturday, an official said.

Provincial police spokesman Jamal Barikzai said that investigation is underway to determine the reason for the blast.

Meanwhile, an official on condition of anonymity said the blast hit a polling center in the first Police District of Kandahar city, injuring 15 people including a security personnel.

More than 9.4 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots amid tight security from 7:00 a.m. (0230 GMT) to 3:00 p.m. (1030 GMT) local time Saturday to select the country's next president.

Sitting President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah are among the 18 candidates vying for the presidency in the war-torn country.
