HAVANA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Monday urged greater efforts to step up the relief work after a heavy tornado hit Havana overnight, which left four dead and 195 injured.

The tornado, with downpours and winds of about 300 km per hour, also incurred heavy damages in five of the 15 municipalities of the Cuban capital.

Diaz-Canel stressed it as priority in a tweet to provide cooked food and drink water at reasonable prices for the affected people in the tornado-hit areas where electricity is out.

In addition, the Cuban president, who visited affected areas in the early hours Monday, voiced his confidence about Havana recovering from the natural disaster before celebrating its 500th anniversary in mid-November this year.

Tornados are rarely seen in the Caribbean island state. The last of its kind hit Cuba in 1940.
