Brazilian federal troops dispatched to Ceara state over crime wave

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Justice and Public Security Minister Sergio Moro decided on Friday to send National Security Force to the northeastern state of Ceara over a recent crime wave there.

A total of 300 national security force officers were dispatched, along with 30 vehicles, to reinforce the local and federal police forces.

Ceara state, notably its capital Fortaleza and metro area, has seen a wave of attacks in recent days. Shots have been fired at banks and buildings, buses were set on fire and local police stations were attacked by homemade bombs.

On Thursday, a bomb was put on the pillar of a viaduct, and a riot in a prison occurred.

According to the Ceara state government, so far 45 people, including teenagers, were arrested for committing those crimes. So far three were injured in the attacks.

The justice and public security ministry also authorized the officers to use force. The troops are going to stay in Ceara state for 30 days, but the period can be extended if necessary.
