SUVA, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Ministry of Health has been taking pro-active steps to nip the problem of typhoid in the bud after rising statistics were recorded recently.

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) reported on Wednesday that the ministry is working closely with the Rural and Maritime Development Ministry and the divisional commissioner's office to identify new water sources and construct proper toilet facilities for the villagers in these two provinces.

Fijian Minister for Health Ifereimi Waqainabete said so far the authorities have recorded a total of 48 cases in Naitasiri, 34 confirmed and 14 suspected. In Namosi, 11 cases were reported of which six were confirmed and five were suspected cases.

Waqainabete said one of the main causes of the increase in cases that they've identified is improper toilet facilities and water sources for these villagers. Some of the villagers are relying on river water for cooking, drinking and other daily chores.

The ministry has successfully been able to consult and negotiate with the landowners to secure a clean water source for the villages. The ministry has also so far constructed water seal toilet facilities in these villages.
