South Africa dominates Regional Youth Games in Botswana

GABORONE, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- South Africa is dominating the eighth edition of the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 youth games that are currently underway in Botswana.

As of Friday which marked the ninth say of the Olympic styled games, South Africa was top of the tally with 67 gold, 56 silver and eight bronze medals, followed by Angola 12-9-18 and Botswana 7-13-21.

South Africa's dominance started with their swimming team almost sweeping all medals on offer.

Botswana swimmer James Freeman became the first local to claim the men's 100m freestyle title on Tuesday and was followed by the boy's volleyball team who won gold on Wednesday after defeating Mozambique.

Meanwhile Botswana women's U-20 football team reached the final after seeing off Namibia 1-0 in a tightly contested semifinal match on Thursday. They will play South Africa who beat Swaziland 2-0 in the final on Sunday.
