ISLAMABAD, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan said on Sunday that it has reopened its consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad that was closed in August over what Pakistani officials had claimed "interference" in diplomatic affairs by local Afghan officials.

Afghan officials had denied any intervention, saying that they had taken certain security measures for thousands of visa seekers who gathered outside the consulate.

Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal said Pakistan's Consulate General in Jalalabad, which was closed on Aug. 30 will resume its visa operations after assurances by the Afghan government that all necessary and required security will be provided to the consulate as per the obligation of the Afghan government under Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963.

"All visa applicants in Jalalabad and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General could now apply for visa with the Consulate General with effect from Monday," he said.

Afghan Deputy Ambassador in Islamabad Zardasht Shams confirmed to Xinhua that both countries had agreed on the reopening of the consulate.
