New Zealand foreign minister to discuss quake relief during visit to Indonesia

WELLINGTON, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters will be seeking an update from the Indonesian government on the impact of the Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami during his regional visit next week.

Peters departs on Monday for a scheduled visit to Thailand from Oct. 1 to Oct. 3 and to Indonesia from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, a government statement said on Saturday.

"The Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami will obviously be a current concern for the Indonesian government," Peters said.

More than 380 people have been confirmed dead after a tsunami triggered by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit an Indonesian city on Friday.

Peters said his visit will be an opportunity to personally express the condolences of New Zealand for the loss of life, and to discuss any potential assistance.

He will also co-chair the New Zealand-Indonesia Joint Ministerial Consultations while in the capital Jakarta, as the two countries celebrate 60 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
