NEW DELHI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least 24 people were injured Monday during stampede inside a Hindu temple in India's eastern state of Bihar, officials said.

The stampede occurred at Garibnath Temple in Muzaffarpur district, about 70 km north of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

"This morning a huge rush of devotees at the temple was witnessed in view of the third Monday of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar, following which a stampede broke out and people fell upon each other," a police official posted in Muzaffarpur said.

"Around two dozen people were injured and some of them fell unconscious but everyone is stable."

According to the official, the injured were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility and provided treatment.

Officials at district magistrate office said the stampede was triggered after devotees reportedly broke few barricades.

"There was huge rush and devotees in a bid to be the first ones to pay obeisance tried to ignore the barricades, which created a stampede like situation," an official posted at the district office said. "However, the timely action from police and rapid action force personnel deployed there regulated the rush and prevented situation from turning ugly."

In 2016, at least 24 people were killed and dozens injured during stampede at a religious gathering in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
