Floods strike Indonesia's capital, business activities remain undisturbed

JAKARTA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Several parts of Jakarta have been hit by floods, displacing thousands of people, but business activities remained undisturbed in the city.

Spokesman of Indonesia's national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said Tuesday that heavy downpours in the city and upstream of rivers have triggered waters overflowing river banks and submerged thousands of houses in nearby areas since Monday.

The floods have affected 11,450 people in East Jakarta, West Jakarta and South Jakarta territories, said Sutopo.

A total of about 6,532 people have to flee homes and take shelters at 31 evacuation centers, he revealed.

The spokesman warned that the disaster caused by weather phenomenon remains threatening in the city and other parts of the archipelagic nation.

"The people are urged to step up alertness in facing the possibility of floods, landslides and whirlwind from occurring as the month of February is the peak of rainy season," he told Xinhua in a text message.
