TAIPEI, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- A cold surge hit Taiwan on Saturday, making the temperature plunge across the island and bringing snow to a number of mountains, according to the local weather department.

Snowfall on the Yushan Mountain, the highest peak of Taiwan with an altitude of nearly 3,952 meters, accumulated to nearly nine centimeters Saturday morning.

In the meantime, snow also fell on the Hehuan Mountain, which is more than 3,000 meters high.

Many Taiwanese were attracted to the top of the mountains to enjoy snow. A hotel at an altitude of 3,150 meters on the Hehuan Mountain, the highest hotel in Taiwan, reported full occupancy over the weekend.

The cold surge is expected to become stronger in the next two days, sending the temperature in northern part of the island below 10 degrees Celsius, and prolonged rainfall is expected in northern and northeastern Taiwan in the coming days, said the weather department.
