ISLAMABAD, June 28 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and over 40 others injured in a fatal road crash in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province on Thursday, local Urdu TV channels reported.

According to the local media reports, the incident happened after a passenger bus overturned due to over-speeding on the Indus highway near Jampur, a city in the country's Punjab province.

The ill-fated passenger bus was heading towards the country's southern port city of Karachi from northwest Peshawar city when the accident occurred.

Police registered a case against the bus driver who fled from the site after the accident.

All the injured people were shifted to the nearby Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Jampur, whereas critically injured persons were referred to neighbouring Dera Ghazi Khan city's government hospital for better treatment.

According to official data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 9,000 road accidents are reported every year since 2011 in the country, killing more than 4,500 people on average annually.

Traffic police officials said that 90 percent of the accidents in Pakistan are caused by human error.
